HSE to Hold World Programming Contest Quarter-finals

On October 18, 2015 for the first time ever, the Faculty of Computer Science at HSE will host the quarter-finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest, ACM ICPC.

The HSE team has done well at the finals in recent years - in 2014 HSE Master’s students won the bronze medal and this year first year Applied Mathematics and Informatics students were the only Russian team of exclusively first year undergraduates who got through to the final.

To participate you need to register a team of three people on the ACM ICPC site until 23.59 on October 15. Please consult Mikhail Gustokashin from the Faculty of Computer Science on how to register your team. Teams can be made up of students from any courses or faculties but they must all be from the same university or institute. The quarter-finals in Moscow will be held at HSE, Moscow State University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. The teams can choose the most suitable venue after registration.

Participants must be under 25, studying on a bachelor’s (1st-4th year) or master’s (1st-2nd year) programme. The teams with the best results will go through to the semi-finals on 5-6th December in St Petersburg. The finals will be on 15-20th May in Phuket, Thailand in 2016. According to the rules, no more than two teams from each university can go through to the semi-finals but the host university and universities that enter more than 50 teams are allocated extra places.

Teams are given 5 hours and the use of one computer to solve 10-12 algorithmic problems in C++ or Java. If you want to test yourself, try to solve problems from last year’s quarter-finals on Codeforces.

If you are an HSE student and you want to enter but you are struggling to put a team together the Centre for Student Competitions is here to help you. Just ask the director, Mikhail Gustokashin for information.
