HSE Joins Two THE Subject Rankings - in Computer Science and Engineering & Technology
For the first time ever, HSE University has entered two THE subject rankings: in Computer Science (in the 301–400 group)and Engineering & Technology (in the 601-800 group). Therefore, HSE has confirmed once again that it is much more than just a specialized social sciences and humanities university, but rather a comprehensive multidisciplinary university, which has become successful in new, innovative areas of natural sciences and engineering.
In the QS rankings, HSE is in the 251-300 group for Computer Science, 451-500 in Engineering & Technology, and 101-150 in Mathematics. Furthermore, HSE University ranks in the Top-100 for Mathematics in the Shanghai Ranking, and is also in the Top-500 of the recently published THE ranking in Physical Sciences.
THE compiled the first ranking of the 100 best universities in Computer Science in 2016. Back then, Russia was only represented by two universities - ITMO and MSU. In 2017, it was expanded to 300 universities, with five Russian institutions appearing. Now, in 2018, the ranking has expanded to include 684 universities, with 16 Russian institutions represented. At present, HSE is 7th among Russian universities.
Russian universities first entered the ranking for Engineering & Technology in 2017, with 10 institutions represented. In 2018, the list has been expanded from 500 to 903 universities, with 28 Russian institutions appearing therein. HSE now ranks 14th among Russian universities.
The subject ranking’s methodology is based on the same 13 indicators as the institutional ranking. They are also classified by five categories, but the indicators’ weight may vary, depending on the subject area.
The Higher School of Economics has been included in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking for psychology for the first time, placing in the 151-175 group. HSE also retained its ranking for the physical sciences (401-500) that it has held since last year.
The Higher School of Economics has significantly improved its position in the U.S. News Best Global Universities subject ranking in mathematics, placing 107th this year. HSE also rose in the U.S. News Best Global Universities institutional ranking, as well as the social sciences and public health subject ranking.
HSE has improved its position in two Times Higher Education (THE) rankings compared to last year. The university demonstrated the greatest growth in the Social Sciences category, rising from the 175-200 group to 126-150. Additionally, HSE improved within the 101-125 group of the Business and Economics ranking.
Academic excellence projects, similar to Russia’s Project 5-100, are common in many countries, but BRICS countries typically have the largest number of universities participating in such projects. That is perhaps why the ranking of the top universities in the five BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – prepared by the QS ranking agency is of particular interest. For two years in a row, 10 Russian universities have been steadily entering the top 50 of this ranking. This time, HSE has taken 37th place, improving its result on last year.
The new ranking of entrepreneurial universities published for the first time by the ‘Expert’ analytical centre features 38 Russian universities, 16 of which are participants in the Project 5-100. HSE took 6th place among Russian universities and 2nd place (after MIPT) among participants in the Project 5-100.
HSE has once again climbed the THE World University Ranking and entered the 301 – 350 range, taking 3rd place in Russia after MSU (199) and MIPT (251-300). HSE first appeared in this ranking two years ago and every subsequent year the university has consistently improved its standing.
For the second year in a row, the QS Ranking Agency has published its Business Masters Rankings. A total of three Russian universities appeared on this ranking (HSE University, St Petersburg State University, and Ural Federal University) in four areas of business education. Last year, only two Russian universities were on the ranking.
The QS Graduate Employability Rankings has published a list of the Top-500 universities in the world in terms of graduate employability outcomes and prospects.
HSE has ranked 7th amongst universities in Eurasia. The ranking has been compiled for the first time by Times Higher Education and is presented by Kazan Federal University.
