HSE and India's Leading Business School IIMI to Create Mirror Laboratory on Environmental and Social Well-Being

HSE and the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIMI) have agreed to open a mirror laboratory, determining their key priorities to be joint activities in the fields of nature conservation, research into environmental behaviour and sustainable development, and territorial branding in relation to Indian regions. The agreement on the new laboratory was reached during an ongoing visit by an HSE delegation to India.

On February 13, 2024, Alexander Sorokin, Dean of the HSE St Petersburg School of Social Sciences, and Professor Himanshu Rai, Director of IIMI, met in the Indian city of Indore, discussed the working plans of the mirror laboratory, and confirmed their readiness to launch the project. In November 2023, during a previous visit by an HSE delegation headed by Director of HSE University-St Petersburg Anna Tyshetskaya, both sides also reached a common agreement on cooperation between the two academic institutions.

The new laboratory will operate in a network format, which will allow colleagues from other HSE departments (in particular the St Petersburg School of Design) to join its work. Alexander Sorokin, the project manager on the Russian side, noted: ‘This is the first initiative of its kind in the history of Russian–Indian relations. We are seeing great interest in developments in the field of environmental and social well-being in the global scientific community. Our project will focus on the study of environmental and climate discussions in the scientific community, the study of environmental behaviour, sustainable development, and territorial branding in the context of positioning the regions of India.’

Another field of cooperation will be the joint study of local communities and culture in India. Scholars from IIMI put forward the idea of undertaking comprehensive research expeditions to various regions of India and pledged their assistance in organising and supporting such projects.

IIMI expressed interest in implementing joint educational projects with HSE in the format of ‘Doing Business in Russia,’ demonstrating the desire of Indian scientists to study the foundations of Russian political, cultural, and social life in greater depth.

HSE and IIMI also agreed to intensify their joint activities in tourism management, sustainable development, educational cooperation, and studying the mechanisms of the spread of fake news. The first stage of these projects will include regular seminars on such issues.
