HSE Academic to Be New IAVE Representative in Russia
Chief Expert of the HSE Centre for Studies of Civil Society and Non-Profit Sector (CSCSNS), Vyacheslav Ivanov, has been appointed national representative for Russia of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE).
IAVE was founded in 1970 by a group of enthusiasts to promote volunteering and international exchange as a way to increase trust and cooperation between people. Today it is one of the largest non-government organisations of its kind in the world and has networks in 77 countries including Russia.
Over the last five years, as a member of IAVE, Vyacheslav Ivanov has taken part in many conferences, business meetings and other events to develop volunteering in Russia. He contributes to all the association’s monthly webinars and is a member of several international committees on volunteering.
Ivanov’s new appointment comes not least in recognition for his work at the CSCSNS, where volunteering is a major topic. In particular, the Centre ran a joint research project with IAVE on corporate volunteering as part of an international project.
Currently, with the globally renowned specialist in the field, Professor David Horton Smith, the Centre is researching what motivates people to volunteer. The Centre’s monitoring of the state of civil society is accumulating empirical data on how many Russians are engaged in volunteering. The Centre presents the results of these and other research projects at conferences, in academic publications, and annual reports ‘On the state of civil society in Russia’ to the Russian Public Chamber.
‘This appointment,’ says Vyacheslav Ivanov, ‘is a great opportunity for students, graduates and professors on every HSE campus, to be better informed about international and Russian volunteering events and programmes they can take part in, under the auspices of the IAVE and other international volunteering development networks like the UN Volunteering programme. We already have a plan to get our students involved with the IAVE and will put it into action from the 1st September.’
