Applications for the Spring School of the HSE International Laboratory for Social Integration Research (April 16 – May 20) are open until March 8.

Chinese students gained practical knowledge in the design, assembly, and operation of small spacecraft and systems, as well as in quantum mechanics, superconductivity, and materials science for solar energy.

Online learning promises flexibility. In asynchronous courses, students can decide when, how, and in what order to engage with learning materials. Yet this freedom comes with new challenges. Without a prescribed learning sequence, students must design their own pathways, and these choices can shape not only how much they learn, but how difficult learning feels.

On February 16, 2026, a joint seminar was held by the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy (IDLab) and Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) under the project titled “Internationalization of Companies from Developing Countries: The Role of Intellectual Resources in Response to Exogenous Shocks,” implemented within the framework of HSE University’s “International Academic Cooperation” initiative. The seminar featured presentations of three studies addressing intellectual capital mobility, business resilience to sanctions pressure, and mechanisms of early internationalization by firms in emerging markets.

Valeria Vinogradova, a researcher at HSE University, together with British colleagues, studied how language proficiency affects cognitive processing in deaf adults. The study showed that higher language proficiency—regardless of whether the language is signed or spoken—is associated with higher activity and stronger functional connectivity within the brain network responsible for cognitive task performance. The findings have been published in Cerebral Cortex.

The annual Winter School-Conference on Bioinformatics was held at the Voronovo UC of the National Research University Higher School of Economics with the participation of the co-organizer, the International Laboratory of Statistical and Computational Genomics, which was attended by more than 150 people from the HSE, IITP RAS, Skoltech, Moscow State University, and MIPT. The event was sponsored by "Genotek".

Is “pre-training” the unsung hero of effective learning—or just an unnecessary hurdle for already smart students? That’s the research quest Anna Gorbunova, Anastasiia Kapuza, Ouhao Chen, and Jamie Costley embark on in their recent study, Rethinking Pre-training: Cognitive Load Implications for Learners with Varying Prior Knowledge. Published in Frontiers in Psychology, their work dives into how priming your mind before tackling complex material can transform the learning experience, challenging long-held beliefs about how we actually absorb knowledge.

In January, HSE University hosted the third GameDevFest of the Faculty of Computer Science—a computer game festival organised by the School of Software Engineering and the project group ‘Computer Game Software Engineering—PIKI’ with the participation of the Vintorog game studio. Guests had the opportunity to play a variety of video games, including demo versions created by FCS students and other aspiring game designers.

On February 11, 2026, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin presented the Moscow Government Prizes for Young Scientists for 2025. Among the 77 laureates was Evgeny Knyazev, Associate Professor of the Basic Department of the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry RAS at HSE University's Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, and Head of the Molecular Physiology Laboratory. Evgeny Knyazev was awarded for a cycle of research on the role of microRNA in the mechanisms of development and diagnostics of oncological, viral and inflammatory diseases, and preeclampsia.

On February 6, 2026, the International Laboratory of Intangible-driven Economy (IDLab) hosted a research seminar focusing on the practical application of artificial intelligence in education.
