Course Syllabus

Abstract

The English Language course prepares students to use English in their further academic study on any foreign programme. It is designed to develop all academic skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) for students to become a competent user of the English language in academic environment (the student has a good command of the language despite some minor inaccuracies and can use and understand the English language in familiar situations; possesses the abilities of the analysis of academic texts, writing factual and analytical essays, listening and note-taking at the lectures and speaking on general and professional themes). The obtained skills are examined in the form of the ICEF final exam taken in June by qualified examiners.

Learning Objectives

• Provide students with a good command of English grammar and vocabulary;
• Enable students to possess academic reading skills which can enable students to skim the text for main idea, to scan the text for specific information, to interpret the text for inferences, attitudes and styles, to deduce meanings from the context;
• Help the students to attain academic writing skills which will enable them to respond to input applying information to a specified task, to elicit, to select, to summarize information in a range of writing activities, such as essays, articles, reports;
• Make sure students acquire academic listening skills to enable students to understand and apply specific information from the input;
• Enable students to pick up academic speaking skills which can allow them to use general, social and professional language, to negotiate, report, explain, summarize and develop a discussion;
• raise the students' general capacity at a level that will enable them to use English in their professional and academic environment granted that they are provided with the specific notions and vocabulary of economics, mathematics, statistics, banking and finance in the course of their studies;
• make sure students have an ability to apply knowledge of the English language, to develop their social competence skills, to form their behavioural stereotypes and professional skills necessary for successive social adaptation of graduates

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Can use familiar vocabulary and grammar structures appropriately
• Obtain necessary for studying in ICEF professional vocabulary
• Possess the required listening and speaking skills
• Can structure two types of an essay, possess academic reading and writing skills
• Can use vocabulary and grammar structures for the essays appropriately

Assessment Elements

• End of the 1st semester test
  An achievement/attainment test designed to show mastery of the syllabus, directly related to language courses, the purpose being to establish how successful the students have been attaining objectives. It shows the standard one student has reached in relation to another at the same stage based on the Banding scale.
• Mid of the 2nd semester test
  An achievement/attainment test designed to show the students’ progress, their competence in academic skills and their strengths and weaknesses in the ICEF final exam preparation.
• Mid of the 1st semester test
  A diagnostic test used to identify the students’ progress, their strengths and weaknesses, intended to ascertain what further teaching is necessary.
• Final Exam
  A proficiency test designed to measure a student’s competence in the form of academic skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) acquisition on the basis of taking the Final exam in ICEF. Students must achieve a minimum overall result of 40% according to the Banding scale. This result is recognized to be successful in their 1st-year studies and ensures pursuing their 2nd-year studies. ICEF final exam will test students in four language skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The test is designed around the international format. Results of all international exams are not accepted as a substitute for the ICEF final exam. They can be taken on students’ own initiative.
