HSE University’s New Gains in Global Rankings: THE WUR Completes the 2019 Global Rankings Spree
THE WUR, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, has compiled its 2019 global rankings. HSE University performed positively, moving up to the 251-300 cohort, and taking third place among Russian universities following MSU and MIPT.
HSE University first joined the published part of the ranking three years ago and has improved its standing since, moving up to a higher cohort with every passing year.
Over the last two years, Russian universities have improved their placing in this ranking: this year, 39 Russian universities appeared on the top list (last year, there were 35 of them).
HSE University has improved its results in 11 out of the 13 ranking indicators:
As with last year, the biggest contribution came from the average-weighted rescaled citation indicator. Since 2009, HSE University has consistently provided comprehensive support for researchers, while also increasing the number of publications in highly-cited journals.
Furthermore, the reputation indicators, based on a survey among world’s most cited scholars (according to Elsevier & THE) on research and education quality, have been expanded.
The total number of publications per researcher has grown over the last five years, and this year, it doubled compared to last year.
In terms of statistical indicators, ‘doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio’ and ‘share of international students and faculty’, as well as financial indicators, added to HSE University’s ranking.
THE ranking focuses on academic institutions’ research potential: over 70% of the ranking indicators are focused on such research achievements.
In 2019, the range of the published ranking was expanded from 1,258 to 1,396 universities.
HSE University was able to place high on the Graduate Employability Ranking (201-250), outpacing its main competitors for the first time in five years. This year, the number of candidates to the ranking was increased 15% (758 universities), with new 36 universities joining the list.
HSE University has firmly entered the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which is known for its rigorous selection criteria. After placing in the ranking for the first time last year, HSE University maintained its position despite increased competition — more than 50 new universities entered the ranking for the first time this year.
HSE recently placed 39th in the QS Top-50 ‘Under 50’ ranking, thus maintaining its position in the Top-40 despite increasing competition in this special academic category.
On June 24-26, 2020, the THE Young Universities Summit will be held for the first time at HSE University in Moscow. An official hand off ceremony was held earlier at the University of Surrey, which hosted the event this year. It was not by chance that HSE University was selected to be next year’s summit host—it is the only Russian university that consistently ranks among the THE top 100 young universities, and this year it took 60th place.
In 2019 the Higher School of Economics has climbed from 84th to 60th place in the Time Higher Education (THE) world ranking of young universities. HSE University is the only Russian university to place in the top 100 of this ranking.
HSE University has retained its position in the Top 100 of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, otherwise known as the Shanghai Ranking, in sociology and mathematics. The university improved in political science and has also placed in the same group in economics. At the same time, HSE moved to the next group in management and entered new subject areas – psychology and business administration. HSE is the only Russian university ranked in four subjects: Sociology, Management, Business Administration, and Political Science. HSE University is Russia’s leader in economics and ranks in the same group as Moscow State University in mathematics.
HSE University has improved its position in the QS institutional ranking by 21 places this year, taking 7th place among Russian universities. The advancement comes thanks to a significant improvement in academic reputation and assessment of university graduates by employers.
The latest results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject demonstrate that Russian universities are continuing to make great strides in international rankings. Among the Russian universities that made the rankings, HSE tops the list with 16 specific subjects and 3 broad subject areas entering the rankings. Compared to last year, HSE has improved its performance in almost all subjects.
HSE University has taken 22nd place in THE Emerging Economies Rankings, improving its position from last year. This ranking includes a total of 35 Russian universities, with 18 of them participating in the 5-100 Project.
