Sixteen top managers of leading Russian and international companies gave online guest lectures and master classes at the HSE Graduate School of Business. CEOs and department heads spoke to students of all Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes of GSB.
Speakers talked about the most topical issues of modern business: from global trends in marketing and management of the future, IT trends, logistics, and retail to strategic consulting, digitalization, and competences and skills for digital economy.

CEO of RAEC, Sergey Plutarenko spoke with students about the Runet (Russian internet – ed.) of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He noted that in 2020, the year that proved all predictions wrong, people had to reconsider many things. ‘It is interesting to answer questions about whether digital economy is winning or not, what we should prepare for in the future, which professions are going to be in demand, and what kind of place our country will occupy in the digital economy. The lecture can serve as a springboard for students to think of potential new niches that can be filled in order to advance the digital economy in the 2030s.’

1C CEO Boris Nurgaliev talked about the capabilities of modern ERP systems, which tend to be the main solution for enterprises when they are going digital. He singled out the 4th generation of ERP for its flexible, open cloud solutions. Boris also shared his thoughts on the Russian government programme, Personnel for Digital Economy, discussed what knowledge and skills early career professionals should possess, and emphasized that there has been an increased demand for specialists. ‘Thankes to faster production cycles, reduced inventory, and improved order processing, 1C profits in the 185 published implementations have increased by 13% on average. You can be either the ones who implement, or the ones who develop IT solutions,’ said Boris Nurgaliev.
1C has a joint department with HSE GSB and its representatives sit on the Advisory Committee of Business Informatics at HSE University. The company will be involved in teaching the Minor in Corporate Information Systems and ‘ERP Systems’ course.
Nikita Pershukov, a 4th-year bachelor’s student studying Information Science and Computation Technology at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE), has placed among the Russian national team’s expanded membership for the WorldSkills Russia competition in the ‘Network and System Administration’ category. In an interview with the HSE New Service, Nikita talked about the team selection process and what lies ahead for him and his fellow teammates.

Arina Smirnova (Kyrgyzstan) knows like no other what it is like to start all over again and achieve her goals in spite of everything. Arina won the HSE Global Scholarship Competition (GSC) for the first time in 2017 and then outperformed herself three years later. This year, alternatives to studying abroad are as relevant as never before. HSE University annually launches new joint programmes with world’s biggest universities. One of HSE’s oldest and most recognized double degree programmes is the ICEF bachelor’s programme, in which students can earn a degree not only from HSE University, but from the University of London as well. Below, we talk about the advantages of such a degree, career opportunities after graduation, and the programme prerequisites.
In the new academic year, first-year students in the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences will have the opportunity to work alongside senior students on joint projects that are both practice and research-oriented.
Many international students study at HSE University St. Petersburg's English-taught programmes. They come to Russia from different corners of the world for different reasons: to learn the Russian language, to live in a new place, or to immerse themselves in an intercultural environment. Several undergraduate students shared their impressions of studying at the university, interacting with classmates and lecturers, and living in St. Petersburg.
Classes will begin on-campus on September 1 (for some graduate programmes on October 1), and wearing masks in university buildings and dormitories will be mandatory for all students and teachers. HSE University will arrange online learning with mandatory support from professors for newly enrolled international students who are currently unable to travel to Russia.
The summer final exam session at HSE University (as well theses defences) was conducted completely online. The HSE News Service talked to international students about what they thought of the new knowledge assessment technologies and how they would like to take exams in future.
Ulyana Rusetskaya of Belarus is in her first year at the HSE Art and Design School. She entered HSE University by winning the HSE Global Scholarship Competition (GSC) for foreign citizens in the area of design. Ulyana spoke with the HSE News Service about how to prepare a project for the GSC and how the HSE community differs from other university communities. First-year undergraduate students of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology took part in an online seminar at George Mason University (USA). The seminar was part of the Coronavirus Research Update summer course, taught by Professor Ancha Baranova.
Among Russian universities, HSE University has the second highest number of subjects to be included in the Shanghai subject ranking (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020). HSE University and ITMO University, respectively, are included in 7 subject rankings, while Moscow State University is represented in 12 subject rankings.
