HSE Faculty of Computer Science Holds 3rd Winter School in Software Engineering

For the third time, HSE University Faculty of Computer Science has held a winter school in software engineering, with over 1000 participants registering for the event. Representatives from the Faculty of Computer Science and its partner companies, including Yandex, Sber, Tinkoff, and MTS, delivered lectures at the school.

Together with colleagues from VK and the gaming industry, they delivered sessions to the participants on a variety of topics, from how to effectively use various platforms for mobile development to the subjectivity of artificial intelligence and how it is related to Robinson Crusoe, as well as helping the students to understand the industry and find new trajectories for development.

Participants and lecturers shared their impressions of participating in the event.

Leonid Golovin, developer, Yandex.Games, and guest lecturer at the Joint Department with Yandex

‘I participated in the winter school for the first time this year, and I have nothing but good impressions of it. I am glad that I had the opportunity to share my experience and my work. I will be glad to participate again next year.’

Kirill Pashigorev, architect of ‘Data Supermarket’, Data Distribution Department, SberData

‘I liked how the school was organised. I was amazed by the wide range of issues that were considered over several days, and the enthusiasm and knowledge provided by experts from large technology companies. I am glad that young people, students and high school students, have such a wonderful opportunity to meet at these training events and study real-life situations and trends in digitalisation.’

Alexander Shakhov, supervisor of the Bachelor's Programme in Information Product Design and Development, Central University

‘This winter school is an excellent format that allows school students to get acquainted with the industry for the first time. I hope there will be more of these kind of events! Today we talk a lot about the fact that AI will take the job of programmers. Well, personally, I'm not afraid of that. I am much more afraid that in a couple of years I will have to compete for vacancies with students who can already create working applications. I hope, and believe, that these students will go on to become strong engineers.'

Dmitry Alexandrov, Professor at the School of Software Engineering, Head of the Laboratory for Cloud and Mobile Technologies

‘The school was very well-organised: there was a wide range of topics and interesting speakers, including our recent graduates. It is also very convenient to participate remotely and choose the time of one’s session in advance. I enjoyed speaking about one of the areas of mobile development that my colleagues and I are currently working on at the Laboratory for Cloud and Mobile Technologies.

I think that participants of this school got some idea of the latest trends in IT technologies, understood what they were most interested in, and outlined specific topics that they would be able to develop in the future.’

Olga Lipatova, computer science teacher at school No. 16 ‘Interest’ (Lyubertsy)

‘I work as a computer science teacher and am currently studying the course ‘Python for Automation and Data Analysis’ at HSE University. I learned about the winter school from HSE news. Of course, I applied right away. The first day was for schoolchildren, and we watched it with some students. I only wish that part of the winter school programme was held, for example, on Saturdays. Then the students could attend lectures, ask their questions and get into the spirit and atmosphere of software engineering.’

Irina Semyachkina, mobile application developer

‘I develop mobile applications in Flutter (Dart programming language). I am particularly interested in modern approaches in the field of mobile development, and this topic was discussed in great detail at the winter school. I would like to note the work, qualifications and involvement of each lecturer, since the presentations were very informative and comprehensive, and it was especially cool that everyone answered lots of questions, shared contacts, and was open to participants.

I would like to thank the organisers and lecturers for the practical classes. Even highly qualified and experienced developers like the school's lecturers may face difficulties, but they know how and where to look for answers. Thanks for outstanding organisation, exciting presentations and an invitation to attend the campus.’

Dmitry Turkin, 3rd-year students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Information Computer Science, Financial University

‘I plan to apply for the master’s programme at HSE University Faculty of Computer Science. I am interested in backend and frontend development, as well as machine learning. Many topics of the winter school coincided with these areas, for example, frontend development using React or mobile library development, and there was even a masterclass on development management.’
