30%

of the total expenditures required to maintain large data centres comes from the cost of electricity.

Despite the fact that Russian data centres do not operate such ‘oceans’ of data as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, the amount of information is growing exponentially. Russia’s Yandex is now among the world's largest search engines. Power consumption by data centres is therefore becoming one of the more acute problems.

This finding comes from research by Yury Leokhin, Head of the Laboratory for High-Capacity Hardware and Software Systems and Local Area Networks at the HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics. More on the results of the study and solutions to this problem can be found on the OPEC.ru website (in Russian).
