Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides students with a window to language diversity by discussing the data from non-SAE, structurally diverse languages representing various areas of the world. The course is by invited instructors proposing a survey of the language of their expertise.

Learning Objectives

  • The course provides a brief introduction to the sociolinguistic situation of a language, describes different aspects of its grammar, from phonetics to lexicon, focusing on those features that represent typological interest, and ends with reading natural texts, first as home assignment and then in the classroom. This course is introductive and has no prerequisites. It giges the students a chance to improve their research skills dealing with an "exotic" language.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • The students are able to reproduce a list of sociolinguistic features of the language in focuse.
  • The students are able to transcribe texts in the language in focuse and read the transcriptions. They are able to recognize and prononce sounds specific for the language in focuse
  • The students are able to read and interpret glosses of the texts in the language in focuse. They are able to write glosses for such texts.
  • The students are able to interpret and to draw syntactic trees for sentences in the language in focuse.
  • The students are able to create a list of 3-5 specific lexical phenomena of the language in focuse. They are able to identify 2-5 typologicaly interesting lexical groups of the language in focuse.

    quizzes can be repassed no later than 7 days before exam, the questions are the same, but their order is not.

    if a student did not participate a discussion in reading class he/she can write an essay on a peper in focuse. dedline is no later than 7 days before exam
Interim Assessment

  • Interim assessment (4 module)
    Grading is based on the results of the student’s assignments (most often, texts in the language). Each section of the course (i.e. each language) is graded separately. The final grade calculated as the weighted average of the grades in each section. The weight of each section is proportionate to the number of the classes (lectures and seminars, indiscriminately) delivered in the section.
