Professor from University of Bologna looks forward to come back to Moscow in autumn

Prof. M. Mariani:

It is now the second time I visit the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and it was a pleasure to discuss with HSE colleagues about future cooperation with the University of Bologna and to guest lecture within the framework of the Service Managementcourse (Instructor: Dr. Marina Predvoditeleva) of the Master Program «Experience Economy: Hospitality Management and Tourism».

During my lectures at HSE Moscow, based on the best selling book The Experience Economy by Joseph B. Pine and James H. Gilmore, I have focused on the progression of the Economic Value in advanced economies from commodities to goods, to services and last but not least to Experiences.

I have illustrated that today most of the companies do not simply extract commodities, or make goods or deliver services, but they actually engage in staging memorable experiences for their customers.

I have discussed the major features of this new fourth economic offering (i.e., the experience) with reference to a number of cases in the manufacturing, entertainment, and tourism sectors.

I hope Russian students liked the content of the class and my interactive approach. Actually class participation was significant especially when we started analyzing together business cases from the entertainment sector.

I strongly believe that this first pilot experience of teaching will pave the way for future effective cooperation between the University of Bologna and the Higher School of Economics and look forward to come back to Moscow in autumn as a visiting professor for the Master Program «Experience Economy: Hospitality Management and Tourism».
