HSE Day for Science Geeks

The special HSE Day will demonstrate real science to its guests at the ‘Science and Technology’ platform. The achievements will be showcased by HSE MIEM, the School of Psychology, and HSE Lab (HSE Prototyping Centre). They will answer the trickiest questions put by the geeks. You’ll be able to get hands on and investigate the technological achievements on display and even test them yourself.

How to save on a virtual reality headset?

Virtual prototyping is widely used by engineers world over to develop devices more quickly. HSE MIEM has a 3D laboratory where the students developed smartphone-compatible VR glasses. MIEM will also showcase other student developments, including an app for an optical gesture recognition system, an intellectual cardiograph, two autonomous robots (a tank robot and Arduino robot), and software for processing thermal imaging.

Is it possible to create a ‘mini me’ with a 3D printer?

3D scanners produce models of real people, and Hollywood already prints copies of celebrities, although this technology is largely used for technical tasks. For example, making actors look older or younger, as in Tron: Legacy, in which 64-year-old Jeff Bridges plays a 35-year-old character.

HSE Lab is a professional community of young engineers and designers who can create almost any electronic devices and gadgets. They also carry out interesting experiments with 3D printing. Visitors will be able to watch them experiment, will have the opportunity to join prototyping master classes, will be able to create their own digital model and print it out, and get freshly made souvenirs.

In addition, HSE Lab students will introduce the guests to ShockTrack, a wireless device to monitor the state of a boxer’s head during a fight. Visitors will also be able to check out the TRY.FIT robot, which can create a 3D scan of the inside of a shoe, as well as a personal 3D printer by 3DPrintus.ru and a large-object 3D scanner. And if taking too many scientific selfies means your smartphone’s battery runs down, the BatOn supercharger, invented in the Lab, can charge it in a matter of seconds.

Why do I and my friend have different saccades?

In 1879 in Paris, Louis Émile Javal discovered that eyes don’t move monotonously during reading, as had previously been thought. Instead, they make short stops (Javal called them ‘fixations) and short rapid movements, ‘saccades’. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of how we read: why we fix on particular words, why this is different for different people, why the eye returns to words that have already been read, why the eye never moves smoothly along the text. The trajectory of eye movement while watching a painting is even more interesting and can be compared to a piece of graphic art itself.

Several laboratories collaborate under the HSE School of Psychology, carrying out thrilling experiments in eye tracking, brain research, and thought research. The platform will introduce guests to a high tech eye-tracker that anyone can test. They will also have an opportunity to meet a computer brain that can read your instructions directly from your brain, and try image-inverting glasses. You’ll also learn to control your pulse with the help of a ‘Pulse Boss’ – and who knows, maybe everyone will have their own pulse controller next year.

The platform will be open from 2 pm to 7 pm.
