Students of HSE Double-Degree Programmes Top London Exams Again

© Lse.ac.uk

The results of exams organized by the University of London (UoL) and the London School of Economics (LSE, a constituent college of UoL) have been announced. Students of HSE ICEF, the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Relations (WEIA) and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) have achieved the highest grades in a variety of subjects and confirmed their reputation as the top representatives of international programmes. Fourteen HSE students received awards for their academic achievements.

The outstanding achievements by students of double-degree programmes offered by ICEF, WEIA and FCS in international examinations contribute to HSE University’s global reputation and showcase the high potential of Russian students and teachers.

There are three award levels in the UoL international programme assessment system:

The Academic Achievement Award is given to students who achieve outstanding results in all the year’s exams. The award comes with a certificate and a letter signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of London.

The Letter of Commendation is given to students who achieve top results in the year’s exams in each specialization. The letter is signed by the Chair of the Board of Examiners with a certificate.

The Top Scorer award is given to students who achieve the highest scores in international programme subjects.

This year, the Academic Achievement Award was given to 10 students of the ICEF international programme, one student of the WEIA international programme, and three students of the FSC international programme. A total of three awards were given for Data Science and Business Analytics (DSBA)—all of them to students of HSE FSC.

Letters of Commendation were given to 109 students from ICEF (the UoL issued a total of 201 letters for students of programmes implemented by ICEF) and 10 students from FSC (out of a total of 12 letters awarded for DSBA programmes).

Twenty-two ICEF students and 12 WEIA students received Top Scorer awards for international students. In addition, eight ICEF students in this category scored 100 out of 100 in mathematics. ICEF students appear among the top students in the world in many subjects every year. This year, they came first in 16 subjects—the highest number to date. Three ICEF students achieved the highest scores in the world in several different subjects at the same time, while WEIA students achieved top global rankings in 12 key subjects for their specialization. Overall, HSE students topped global scores in 28 subjects of the University of London international programme.

Academic Achievement Awards are the most valuable awards our students can win. Only three or four of these are awarded in each specialization; we took a total of ten awards out of 50, having achieved top scores in specialist subjects and demonstrated the level of knowledge of ICEF students at the global level.

The Top Scorer criterion is no less important. It indicates the level of knowledge achieved in each subject of the international programme by its best students. Their success demonstrates the highest level of proficiency in such subjects as mathematics, finance, economics and econometrics. We are happy that our students rank at the top levels of their professional disciplines.

This year, we were also pleasantly surprised to see that our students received more than half of all the Letters of Commendation awarded worldwide: 109 out of 201. These figures are particularly telling given the fact that ICEF students comprise about only 5% of the total number of students on the LSE UoL international programme. The number of award winners grows annually, which adds to the prestige of our educational process. We have almost hit the upper limit of our indicators.

The online format for classes and testing has not impacted the number of awards received. We have been able to organize learning and knowledge-assessment processes better and more efficiently than many educational centres across the globe. I believe that this is one of the reasons behind our success in this year’s awards, as well as being an objective indicator for the University of London.

Maxim Bratersky, Academic Supervisor of the HSE University and University of London Parallel Degree Programme in International Relations

Since the very first year our students took the London exams, they have demonstrated outstanding results in various areas of study. In 2018, our students received three awards out of the total four, setting an example for subsequent generations. This year, our programme received 13 awards, which is further confirmation that our international relations research is among the strongest in the world. Our programme’s interdisciplinary approach and strong teaching team set it apart from similar programmes worldwide.

We are very proud of each student, each award and each teacher who contributes to our joint success story!

Tamara Voznesenskaya, Academic Supervisor of the HSE University and University of London Double Degree Programme in Data Science and Business Analytics

Since the first London examination period last year, the students of our young programme have been among the best UoL students in the world: they achieved the best scores in statistics, business and management. This year, they improved their results and earned the highest UoL accolades for students of our field, most of which (10 out of 12) were Letters of Commendation.

The traditionally strong fundamental training in mathematics and programming offered by FCS gives our students an advantage and helps them achieve high scores. We are proud of their academic success and hope they don’t rest on their laurels! Congratulations to the teaching team on these wonderful results!
