Based on the assessment results, the programme's strengths were identified as its broad coverage of educational disciplines, in-depth exploration of theoretical aspects in machine learning, the quality of staff, and the involvement of potential employers. This is the fifth educational programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science to receive this prestigious professional and public accreditation.

The AI Alliance Russia aims to bring together technology companies to foster AI advancement in Russia and promote technological leadership for Russia and the corporate members of the alliance in the global tech market. Members include Sber, Gazprom Neft, Yandex, VK, RDIF, SIBUR, Uralchem, Rusagro Group, Severstal, Samolet Group, and more.

Education is one of the key areas of activity for the association. The alliance is focused on improving the quality of AI training, cultivating a new generation of educators, and advancing the development of educational programmes in the field of AI. Professional and public accreditation, as a vital component of these efforts, aims to enhance the quality of training for relevant specialists and to bolster their competitiveness in both Russian and international labour markets while strengthening educational programmes' alignment with the real economy and engagement with the business community.

The first accreditations were issued by the AI Alliance Russia in January 2022 to educational programmes at HSE University, ITMO University, and Ural Federal University. The accredited programme at HSE University was the Bachelor's Programme in 'Applied Mathematics and Information Science,' which is known for its exceptionally high USE score requirements. This year, the minimum required USE score was 310, meaning that applicants needed to score 100 points in each of the three Unified State Exams and the maximum possible 10 points for individual achievements.

Since then, four more educational programmes offered by the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have been accredited by the alliance, including the Bachelor's Programme in ‘Data Science and Business Analytics’ and the Masters' Programmes in ‘Financial Technologies and Data Analysis,’ ‘Data Analysis in Biology and Medicine,’ and ‘Data Science.’

Ilya Samonenko, Deputy Dean for Methodical and Educational Work, HSE University

Our faculty actively collaborates with the AI Alliance, an association of leading companies dedicated to the development of areas related to artificial intelligence and, more broadly, the IT industry in Russia. Obtaining independent professional and public accreditation from such an authoritative organisation attests to the high assessment of our programmes by employers, fostering increased competitiveness and attractiveness among applicants.

The Master's Programme in 'Data Science' received its certificate of accreditation in October this year.

The programme's uniqueness lies in the fact that its students receive education at the intersection of two pivotal fields in science and technology: big data methodologies and artificial intelligence. Programme graduates develop a repertoire of cutting-edge and effective mathematical technologies not typically covered in traditional mathematical textbooks. Students can choose one of two specialisations: 'Intelligent Systems and Structural Analysis' and 'Technologies of Modelling of Complex Systems.'

To accredit this programme, industry experts from the alliance conducted a thorough assessment, examining criteria such as the involvement of potential employers in programme implementation, the qualifications of instructors, the availability of technological resources, and the alignment of graduates' competencies with the demands of the labour market.

The assessment recognised the following strengths of the Master's Programme in 'Data Science':

a broad array of educational disciplines

an in-depth exploration of the theoretical aspects of machine learning

programme staff with the requisite level of professional qualifications, validated by a substantial number of publications in the Q1–Q2 tier

 the involvement of potential employers

Additionally, the experts provided a set of recommendations for further enhancing the programme. For instance, they suggested supplementing it with disciplines in areas such as databases, big data processing methods, and optimisation techniques.

Sergei Kuznetsov, Academic Supervisor, Master's Programme in 'Data Science'

Our Data Science programme was the first such programme to be launched in Russia. It was established in collaboration with leading figures in both the Russian scientific community and the IT industry, and we are committed to preserving its significant academic and applied potential. The programme is in high demand both in Russia and internationally. Accreditation from the AI Alliance confirms our reputation and will assist in attracting more talented students interested in mastering methods of working with big data and artificial intelligence.

The faculty intends to submit additional educational programmes in which students acquire competencies in the field of artificial intelligence for assessment. This includes recently launched master's programmes, which can undergo assessment only after the first cohorts of graduates complete them.

To learn more about the educational programmes at HSE University, visit the Open Day hosted at the academic building at 11 Pokrovsky Bulvar on November 26. The event will feature a presentation of the Master's Programme in 'Data Science' at 3 pm. You can register and submit questions for faculty representatives here.
