The results of the vote were announced at the General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), which took place from June 1-3. The newly elected Members and Corresponding Members of the RAS include eight scholars from HSE University.

Two HSE University employees have become RAS Members.

Andrey Yaroslavtsev, a renowned specialist in physical chemistry of solid state, was elected RAS Member in ‘Physical Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Materials’. He heads the HSE Joint Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Material Science with the RAS Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and is Head of the Bachelor’s programme in Chemistry.

Alexey Gippius, a prominent linguist and philologist, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Laboratory of Linguo-Semiotic Studies, was elected RAS Member in Linguistics. He teaches at a research workshop on ‘Introduction to Old Russian Philology’ for first-year students of the Faculty of Humanities.

Six more HSE University employees were elected Corresponding Members of RAS.

Boris Feigin and Vladimir Bogachev were elected Corresponding Members in Mathematics.

Tenured HSE Professor Boris Feigin is a specialist in representation theory, mathematical physics, algebraic geometry, Lie groups and algebras, conformal field theory, homological and homotopical algebra, and quantum theories. He heads the HSE – Skoltech International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics, leads a research seminar and teaches an algebra course at the Faculty of Mathematics.

HSE Professor Vladimir Bogachev is one of the most frequently cited Russian mathematicians. He is as a leading expert in measure theory, probability theory, infinite dimensional analysis, and partial differential equations. This year, he is teaching a course on ‘Mathematical Analysis’ at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics.

Alexey Shaitan, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Research Fellow at the International Laboratory of Bioinformatics, was elected Corresponding Member of RAS in ‘Engineering Biology and Gene Technology’. He teaches a course on Bioinformatics for third-year students in the Faculty of Computer Science.

Professor Mikhail Posypkin was elected Corresponding Member of RAS in ‘Computational Methods and Artificial Intelligence Systems’. He heads the Intelligent Technologies in System Analysis and Management: Joint Department with Federal Research Center of Computer Science and Control of Russian Academy of Sciences at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science; he teaches courses for bachelor’s and master’s students.

Alexander Lutovinov, a leading specialist in high-energy astrophysics, relativistic compact objects, and accretion, was elected Corresponding Member of RAS in Astronomy. At HSE University, he is Professor at the Joint Department of Space Physics with the Space Research Institute (RAS). His academic career is also connected to this Institute: he started working there as a student.

Sergey Ivanov, an expert in nanotechnology, semiconductor heterostructures, low-dimensional systems, and molecular beam epitaxy, was elected Corresponding Member of RAS in Physics. He heads the RAS Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, as well as HSE University’s joint department with this Institute. He leads a research seminar at the HSE St. Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

In total, HSE University employs 48 Members and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Nikita Anisimov, HSE University Rector

We are very proud with the achievements of our staff members. They won a tense competition, which proved very high for the position of an RAS Member and Corresponding Member. I believe that our colleagues will honourably represent HSE University at the Russian Academy of Sciences and will set a high standard for future candidates. Each of them is a leading specialist in their field: mathematics, linguistics, astronomy, or AI studies. Today, Russian academia is facing the hugely important task, which is to be a driver for the country’s technological development. I believe that the newly elected RAS members will bring a fresh perspective and energy for academic breakthroughs.

Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE University Academic Supervisor

The mere list of scientific fields in which new RAS members were elected from HSE University demonstrates that we have become a multidisciplinary classical university. Half of the new members are not only HSE professors, but heads of research centres in the RAS system. Close integration with the RAS and its leading institutes has become a feature of natural science at HSE University. It is an educational projection of the relevant RAS research teams.

HSE University congratulates its respected colleagues and wishes them new academic achievements.
