‘The Most Important Issue Today is to Successfully Navigate Stormy Waters’
Nandan Unnikrishnan, Distinguished Fellow and Supervisor of the Eurasia Programme at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), will talk at HSE University about the challenges and prospects of Russia-India relations on December 8. The seminar will take place as part of the ‘India and Global Policy Challenges’ project. Olga Kharina, Research Fellow at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, and Nandan Unnikrishnan talked to the HSE News Service about the project.
The project ‘India and Global Policy Challenges’ was launched in September 2022 and has been planned for one year. The project is headed by Olga Solodkova, Associate Professor at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs School of International Regional Studies. The participants are Aleksei Zakharov, Research Fellow at the International Laboratory on World Order Studies and the New Regionalism, Olga Kharina, Research Fellow at the School of International Regional Studies, and a team of eight HSE students. The goal of the project is to carry out comprehensive studies of India’s foreign policy today.
The project includes a series of discussions with experts who express a range of views in order to get an objective perspective on the key issues of Indian foreign policy. The organisers attract students of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, as well as other HSE programmes on South Asian studies, to the project. HSE University teachers who come from India participate in the project’s monthly academic workshops. In particular, Roy Chowdhury, Assistant Professor at the School of Sociology, diplomatic editor of The Economic Times journal, participated in the roundtable discussion ‘India’s Domestic and Foreign Policy Today: Problems and Trends’.

Our research goals include analysing India’s participation in the global political and economic systems, studying India’s perspective of its role and place in the modern world order, systemising and presenting the results of research studies into India’s poly-strategy in global and regional dimensions, and more.
We developed the concept for Indian Studies at the university and launched the HSE University India Club. We have established and continue to develop partner links with such Indian research centres and universities as the Observer Research Foundation, United Services Institution, the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, and others. We are happy to host the scientific seminar ‘Geopolitical Shifts in Eurasia and Their Impact on Russia-India Relations’ with the participation of Nandan Unnikrishnan, Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation.

The most important issue today, in my opinion, is to successfully navigate the stormy waters that are currently rocking the world at the geopolitical level. This concerns many problems, including the situation in Ukraine, instability in the prices of petroleum products, relations between the USA and China, and more. India, first and foremost, strives for stability. It is necessary to find a balance in relations between India and Russia that would allow us to establish mutually beneficial trade between our countries. For India, it is important to find export products that will be of interest to Russia. Pharmaceuticals, tea, and other goods are only a small fraction of what could be offered as part of trade relations. Work is underway in this area and the results will be visible in some time.
I consider it important to develop cooperation between the Observer Research Foundation and HSE University; our think tank is interested in exchanging experts with the university.

The distinguished Indian mathematician Professor Neena Gupta delivered a presentation at the celebration of the 100th seminar on algebraic transformation groups organised by the Laboratory on Algebraic Transformation Groups at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. HSE University Opens Research Hub at University of Delhi
HSE University and the University of Delhi have signed an agreement on strategic cooperation and joint actions. According to the agreement, a large research hub will begin operating at the partner university in India.

On April 11, the Indo-Russian Education Summit, uniting universities in Russia and India, opened in New Delhi. The opening ceremony was attended by Denis Alipov, Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Gribov, Deputy Minister of Education of Russia, Pavel Shevtsov, Deputy Head of Rossotrudnichestvo, as well as representatives of Indian and Russian universities, including a delegation from HSE University.
HSE University in St Petersburg Enters International Market of Continuing Education
For the first time, HSE University in St Petersburg introduced international partners to the programmes of continuing professional development (CPD) that have been implemented at the university. The presentation took place during the visit of representatives of the HSE Institute of Continuing Professional Education to India.

HSE and India's Leading Business School IIMI to Create Mirror Laboratory on Environmental and Social Well-Being
HSE and the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIMI) have agreed to open a mirror laboratory, determining their key priorities to be joint activities in the fields of nature conservation, research into environmental behaviour and sustainable development, and territorial branding in relation to Indian regions. The agreement on the new laboratory was reached during an ongoing visit by an HSE delegation to India.
