Course Syllabus

Abstract

In Russian higher education, there are no courses centered on adaptation as a form of intersemiotic translation, by means of which a literary material is transposed into another semiotic environment making it possible to highlight a socio-cultural experience that the audience would find valuable and relevant. The course in question is supposed to narrow this gap. It will present adaptation studies as an interdisciplinary field of research emerging at the intersection of semiotics, translation theory, literary criticism, film and theater studies, mediology, sociology, cultural, postcolonial and gender studies. Also, it will explore adaptation processes and their creative motivations, introduce students to key contemporary approaches to adaptation and systematize knowledge that will allow them to see more clearly the role of film adaptation in the modern cultural process.

  • Students will adhere to approaches from both traditional and emerging paradigms to see how film adaptation may be researched.
  • Students will borrow insights and adopt research approaches from the fields of semiotics, visual aesthetics, translation theory, literary criticism, film studies, and mediology.
  • Students will review contemporary socio-cultural perspectives on film adaptation and evaluate critically the role that adaptations hold today.
  • Students will review, analyze, and evaluate the context, in which adaptation studies evolve.
  • Students will review, analyze, and evaluate the question of authorship in film adaptation from the point of view of intertextuality.
  • Students will analyze distinctive features specific to film adaptations.
  • Students will learn conventions and laws of film adaptation in various genres.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Final Examination
    The final exam is conducted orally and includes questions covering the materials of the whole course. The final exam materials and criteria can be updated closer to the end of the course, but no later than the terms specified in the HSE University regulating documents.
  • non-blocking Essays
    The number of essays to be submitted will vary depending on the course dynamics.
  • non-blocking Class Participation and Home Assignments
    Class participation involves taking part in discussions, debates, round-table talks, case studies; independent preparation for seminars (information search; reading papers; watching videos; annotating and rendering the obtained materials). If a seminar is held online, class participation is graded under the condition that the student keeps their camera on. Online participation via chat only is worth 1 point maximum.
  • non-blocking Presentations
    The course ends with the presentation session. If a student reads the script of the presentation, they get a warning. If the reading continues, the student gets a zero.
