How to Teach Business Informatics
20 October, 2014, was a special day for the business informatics community in Russia. The International conference ‘Enterprise value management using subject-oriented BPM’ opened the annual assembly of the business informatics Education and Methodology Union (EMU) hosted by the Higher School of Economics.
Acting dean of the Faculty of Business Informatics Prof. Dr. Svetlana Maltseva summarized the main results:
‘This year we have decided to combine our annual meeting of Russian Higher Education Institutions where business informatics is taught, with a scientific and practical-oriented event devoted to new methods of business process modelling.
It was a pleasure to welcome the founder of subject-oriented methodology in Business process modeling (Subject-oriented BPM) Dr. Albert Fleischmann, to Russia at the HSE. We have created opportunities for intensive collaboration of EMU members with representatives from Russian companies, and Russian and international academic societies.’
The main idea of the S-BPM approach is very simple – any organization is represented as a network of communication processes that could be modeled, verified and later executed by employees themselves on the basis of specialized software. This way of structured communication gives to an employee the chance to rethink all possible process variants in advance, to substitute unstructured mailing exchange with much clearer processes for instant communication, and what’s most important: to change the process model quickly after clients’ requirements change.
Prof. Dr. Werner Schmidt from Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (Germany) talked about the scientific significance of S-BPM while guest speakers from industry (Dr. Ralf Helbig from Detecon, Nils Meyer from Metasonic AG and Ilya Mashkov from LogikaBPM) pointed out the peculiarities of S-BPM’s integration in various corporate cultures and projects in the past. Stephan Borgert from Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) predicted the further development of process management and proclaimed the semantic future of service-oriented BPM. In his vision almost any process in the future could be created just-in-time from standardized services after parsing the request string coming from the customer.
Conference participants pointed out that the S-BPM approach facilitates the creation of small flat project teams working on common processes. The automotive German giant AUDI has begun to pilot integration of this kind of team structure.
The second day of the event was taken up with presentations by Russian universities business informatics EMU representatives, and an open lecture from Muenster University, the HSE business informatics faculty’s partner with whom it executes a number of exchange programs and projects in both Russia and Germany. EMU members at the conference mentioned that participation in international projects is a big challenge and an important opportunity for business informatics development in Russia.
As an outcome, the HEI representatives have proposed not to limit the EMU work only to the annual meeting steering educational programs, but to actively use the network during the year and to take the best from the experience of other universities.
