UBI Global Ranks HSE Business Incubator One of Europe’s Top 10 Incubators

The Higher School of Economics’ Business Incubator placed seventh in the UBI Global 2015 ranking of the best university business incubators in Europe. The results were announced at the regional UBI Awards in Europe ceremony in Turin.

Incubator productivity was measured using 60 different metrics that fall under three main categories – impact on the ecosystem, value for clients, and incubation programme attractiveness. The cumulative score of HSE Business Incubator surpasses the averages for all indicators under review.

In completing its analysis, UBI factors in the resources and capabilities of the incubator itself – income, number of jobs created, number of partners, number of events held, etc. – as well as the performance of residents and alumni, such as volume of investments raised, startup survival rate, and number of deals.

‘This is a well-deserved assessment of the work carried out by several generations of Business Incubator staff, as well as our residents and graduates. It also shows the Incubator’s contribution to the development of an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country. In our nine years of operations, we have gone from being a group of unknown enthusiasts pushing startup issues to a group of professionals in the expert community. HSE Business Incubator is still a place where young entrepreneurs can find help and support in developing their business,’ says HSE Business Incubator Director Mikhail Erman.

The UBI Global rating is the only rating that compares the productivity of business incubators around the world. In 2015, more than 500 business incubators from 73 countries in six geographic regions took part in UBI Global, and 330 of them (64 countries) were recommended for benchmarking. The main areas of the incubators’ specialization include IT (39%), social issues (13%), environmental technology (8%) and biotechnology (7%).

HSE Business Incubator is one of the most successful platforms for developing entrepreneurship and supporting startups in Russia. A structural division of the Higher School of Economics, the Business Incubator is the first of its kind in Russia and was created by students and faculty of HSE. Since 2006, the HSE Business Incubator has consulted more than 500 startups, and over 10,000 people participate in the organisation’s events each year. HSE{Inc} projects include the residency programme HSE{Pro}, the Social Accelerator, the Startup of the Year award, and the Iron Entrepreneur business game.
