Faculty of Computer Science Members Win Prizes in ICPC Challenge Championship

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Challenge took place at the end of August. Unlike the traditional ICPC format, in which teams of three students solve a set of algorithmic tasks, participants of the ICPC Challenge must individually solve an optimisation problem that is relevant to science-driven industry, but which does not have an exact algorithmic solution. In the end, prize places were taken by Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the Centre of Student Competitions at the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science (FCS), and Dmitry Rempel, student of the faculty.

Representatives of 25 countries took part in the ICPC Challenge. Among them were 55 winners of online rounds, participants of training camps, and trainers of ICPC finalist teams.

Participants of the ICPC Challenge work on one optimisation task—the better their solution, the more points they receive. Solving these kinds of tasks requires not only knowledge of algorithms, but also the ability to analyse data, apply machine learning methods, and implement complex programs.

This time, the ICPC Challenge Championship tasked participants with optimising buffer sharing and preallocation for a multi-tenant database. Today, many databases are stored in the cloud. Database queries from various clients can be staggered over time, for example, when clients are located in different parts of the world. This allows the equipment to provide a much faster service. This requires the ability to dynamically change the size of the buffer for each client in accordance with increases and decreases in database activity.

The Codeforces platform includes an example of a similar problem posed in one of the qualifying rounds.

When the results were tallied up, Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the Centre of Student Competitions and trainer of HSE University’s team for ICPC, won first place in the trainer standings, while first-year student of the Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and Information Science of the Faculty of Computer Science Dmitry Rempel finished third in the overall standings.

Mikhail Gustokashin:

— Solving tasks for science-driven industry is our faculty’s strong suit. Our graduates and students work in the research departments of many companies, and HSE University’s success in competitions like this only confirms that we are capable of applying our knowledge, inventing new things, and developing a solution into a finished project in a very limited amount of time.

Our students acquire the necessary knowledge and abilities at the university because they are taught not only by theorists and scientists, but also by practitioners.

This is not the first time members of HSE University have won the ICPC Challenge. In 2022, a team of FCS students took first place in the ICPC World Finals Challenge.

Congratulations and continued good luck to our colleagues!
