Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I send my application materials?

Applications procedures differ for Russian and International candidates. Russian candidates should apply through https://ma.hse.ru/, International candidates should follow the instuctions  

Can I enter the program through winning an 'Olympiad' competition?

Yes, you can! You can sign up here: http://olymp.hse.ru/ma/ (Russia, CIS countries, and the Baltics citizens only).

What is the cost of living in Moscow?

What is the cost of the program?

Tuition for our program is RUB 400,000 per academic year. Stipends and full tuition waivers are available for excellent students. 

What is a tuition waiver? Is it the same as a state-funded study slot?

Yes. Students from Russia, CIS countries, and the Baltics are eligible for a state-funded study slot.

Students from others countries are also eligible for state-funding for their studies through a "State Quota Scheme" which also removes tuition costs. More information on State Quota Scheme is available here http://www.hse.ru/international/quota.

For which type of work will the program qualify me?

Our students will be qualified for the international job market in sociological research. Our students will be uniquely suited for gaining admission to outstanding PhD programs in sociology and for gaining positions in universities, research institutions as researchers and analysts.

Is my English language ability good enough?

English language certification results should be submitted by all applicants, with two exceptions:

       (1) Native English language speakers
       (2) Students who have earned a university degree in a program entirely taught in the English language. 

The table below gives the English tests that we recognize and the level that must be achieved in each one in order to meet our English language requirement fully.

I won't have my Bachelor degree by the deadline. Can I still apply?

Yes! You should submit your transcripts current until the application date and then will have to turn in your completed transcripts and university degree later.

I already have a Master's degree, but I want a second one. Am I eligible?

Indeed, if you are an International participant, you are eligible to study for this program even if you have another master degree. 

When will I know if I am accepted for admission?

The application acceptance window goes until the end of May, but we may give select students 'early decision' offers before this date. 

I don't know much about the Higher School of Economics. What can you tell me about this institution?

The NRU-HSE is among Russia's very best (top one or two) institutions in the social sciences. It is a young, dynamic university with very high educational standards, top international contacts, and researchers and lecturers of a high standard. Please see HSE website for more details. 

I have not studied sociology before. Am I still welcome to apply?

We welcome applications from students also from neighboring disciplines, such as (but not limited to) political science, economics, psychology, anthropology, and the humanities. 

Are there special steps to be taken to have my educational transcripts legalized in Russia?

Foreign educational diplomas must be legalized for use in Russia. Our international office will support you on this issue. You may apply without this process being completed.
