Last year the HSE Nizhny Novgorod signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese university, agreeing to develop a partnership in science, joint research projects, and student mobility.
The first visit by Chinese students took place in July, a time of the year when they could successfully combine academic studies with cultural and historical sightseeing in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Students from the HSE’s Faculty of Law prepared an extensive cultural programme for their Chinese colleagues, which acquainted them with the history of Nizhny Novgorod and the artistic handicrafts of Gorodets and Semenov.
Now, on a return visit, our students will visit Chongqing, China. For three weeks — from September 11 to October 1, 2014 — the students will learn the basics of Chinese law, culture and language. The language of instruction will be English. The HSE delegation is headed by Doctor of Law, Professor Olga Berzin.

HSE University’s Faculty of Law has developed two new Continuing Professional Development programmes: ‘Introduction to the Indian Legal System’ and ‘Introduction to the Chinese Legal System.’ What makes these programmes unique is that well-known practising lawyers from these countries will teach there, while leading local law universities will act as partners. The target audience of the programmes is lawyers from Russian companies conducting foreign economic activities in India or China.

In early November 2023, a delegation from HSE University visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzhen. HSE University representatives took part in CUHK-Shenzhen 2023 International Partner Day and discussed the existing student exchange agreement with colleagues from China.
‘It’s a Very Small Area of Political Science, and Working to Redress That Is Very Satisfying’
On March 15, Judas Everett defended his doctoral dissertation ‘The Effect of the Patterns in the Dissolution of Communism on the Transition to New Systems in Eastern Europe’, which investigates the relationship between the demise of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe and the quality of democracy in the post-communist regime. The defence took place remotely. His academic supervisor was Professor Andrey Akhremenko of the HSE University School of Politics and Governance at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Cliometrics: 20th-century Revolutions Came in Waves
Having studied the 20th century revolutionary processes, Andrey Korotayev (HSE), Leonid Grinin (HSE) and Anton Grinin (MSU) have put together an extensive evidence base, proposed a new typology of revolutions and revolutionary waves, and introduced the concept of 'analogues of revolutions'. Their study '20th Century Revolutions: Characteristics, Types, and Waves' is the follow-up to an earlier paper published in Russian. The new findings are presented in Humanities & Social Sciences Communications.
Justice 'Ex Machina': Using Artificial Intelligence to Fight Corruption
In Mexico, a pilot project applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms enabled the Tax Administration Service to detect 1200 tax-evading companies and 3500 fraudulent transactions within three months – a task that would have taken 18 months using conventional methods. Despite some obvious benefits, the use of AI-based solutions to counter corruption also entails several challenges, according to experts of the HSE Laboratory for Anti-Corruption Policy (LAP) and the HSE Faculty of Law who have examined the relevant experience of several countries. A report based on the study’s* findings was presented at the XXIII Yasin (April) International Academic Conference hosted by the Higher School of Economics.

HSE University Ranks Third Among Russian Law Schools for Graduates’ Salaries
HSE University has risen from fourth to third place in the Superjob University Ranking in terms of the salaries made by young professionals in the legal field who graduated in 2014–2019. According to the ranking’s authors, our graduates can expect to earn an average of 100,000 rubles a month in Moscow.
