The Joint Department with 1C will train highly qualified engineers and developers with mathematical expertise, strong research profiles, and a fluency in modern software tools. Department graduates will be able to effectively solve both system-related and applied problems in business automation.

The opening of the joint department represents a new step in the development of collaboration between 1C and HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science (FCS). This past spring, 1C founder and director Boris Nuraliev became a member of the FCS Board of Trustees, and he will now also head the new department.

As part of the FCS School of Software Engineering, the joint department will combine the Faculty’s rigorous research and teaching potential with 1C’s extensive practical experience in complex software solution development.

1C employees will teach a range of courses where students will work with signature 1C methodological materials. In fact, in the 2019/2020 academic year, 1C employees Nikita Starichkov, Denis Krakhmalev, Valery Statinov and Alexander Mikhalevich already taught electives for HSE students. These courses included ‘Programming Technologies’, ‘Metaprogramming’, ‘Front-End Development on ReactJS’, ‘Advanced Algorithms and Structures Data’, and ‘Linux Kernel Development’. The firm is also involved in the development of the DevOps course for the online Master of Data Science programme.

The opening of a joint department at the Faculty of Computer Science is one of the most important steps in 1C and HSE University’s long-term cooperation strategy. I would like to express the hope that the training courses, electives, and the new specialization in Industrial Software Engineering will be of interest to students, expand their knowledge and skills, and in general have a positive effect on both Russian and international positions of the department, faculty, and university. We have taken a great responsibility upon ourselves—it is not so easy to provide the highest level of teaching that is customary at the HSE, but we will do everything necessary.

Like last year, 1C will offer FCS students topics for projects, coursework, and thesis work. The involvement of company employees in the supervision and evaluation of student work helps to strengthen the work from an engineering and industrial point of view. In the 2019/2020 academic year, 34 students worked on 1C projects, and there were seven term papers written on 1C topics. The company has recently established a set of scholarships to recognize promising FCS students engaged in 1C project work, and in September 2020, the first 1C scholarship recipients will be announced.

In my second year, I completed a 1C project to create an augmented reality interface. This was my first software project. Before that, I didn’t know anything about augmented reality and computer graphics. Thanks to my experience with the project, I gained a lot of practical knowledge. While studying the OpenCV library and basic computer graphics, I learned how to programme in Java and use the Android Studio platform, became familiar with the properties of ARCore, and learned how to create simple Android applications. I now have a strong interest in augmented reality and would like to be able to further expand my knowledge and skills related to this field. The opening of the Joint Department will help students expand their horizons, gain valuable experience, and also help attract highly qualified specialists for research and teaching activities. Plus, the department will be able to incentivize students to promote innovative ideas and create cool projects.

The firm also plans to create a wide-ranging internship program, that will enable students not only to expand their knowledge, but also gain experience in the industry working on the real projects of one of the leaders of the Russian IT market.

In addition, faculty members will have access to 1C software products and methodological materials for their courses and will receive free training at the company's training centres.

I participated in the Hack.Moscow 2.0 hackathon with a project to improve business processes (such as contractor searches and advertising). After that, 1C invited our team to its offices where they allocated us a room and offered to help us develop our idea while providing all the necessary support. The experience was extremely positive, I will be glad to take courses in the 1C Joint Department at the FCS.

I interacted with 1C during my 2nd year as part of a software project devoted to the classification of fine motor movements using mobile devices. While working on this project, I gained skills in mobile development, and I also got acquainted with some classification methods. The opening of the Joint Department with 1C is a wonderful event. I have only positive experiences with the company, I think that under the guidance of its specialists you can learn a lot.
