Less than two weeks remain until the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, which is being held in Russia for the first time in history. During the tournament, the international conference 'Sport and the Future' will take place in Moscow, starting on June 29. The event will gather over 300 representatives from international sporting organisations, leading experts on worldwide sports and the heads of international and national football associations, leagues and clubs.
International Partners Week at HSE St. Petersburg Gathers Partners and Friends
Dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the HSE St. Petersburg campus, the recent International Partners Week welcomed 65 colleagues and friends from 43 institutions across Europe and Asia, reflecting the inspiring international ecosystem that HSE seeks to develop in St. Petersburg. Against the backdrop of wonderful St. Petersburg weather, the event incorporated thoughtful discussions on common issues and challenges in global higher education, best practices in managing internationalization, current trends and policies related to Russia’s higher education development, and cooperation agreements.
First PhD at HSE Received under New Procedure
On May 22, the first thesis for an HSE PhD degree was defended. Following the new procedure, mathematician Pavlo Gavrylenko defended his thesis on isomonodromic deformations and quantum theory. This took place not before a big dissertation council, but a committee of experts in this particular field of mathematical physics.
Russian Language Festival to Take Place on Red Square

HSE Professor to Head Up Machine Learning Research at Samsung Centre for Artificial Intelligence
On May 29, Samsung opened its new Artificial Intelligence Centre in Moscow. Dmitry Vetrov, Professor of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, will become one of its leaders and oversee research in machine learning.
Exploring Fake News and Propaganda in Today’s World
This month, Dr. Oliver Boyd-Barrett, Professor Emeritus at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, delivered at open lecture at HSE Moscow entitled ‘Fake News and Propaganda’. An expert in international media, war and propaganda, and media political economy, Dr. Boyd-Barrett is the author of a number of books, including ‘Western Mainstream Media and the Ukraine Crisis: A Study in Conflict Propaganda’ (2016) and ‘Media Imperialism’ (2014). Following his lecture, he spoke with the HSE News Service about the topic of fake news more broadly and about how people can protect themselves from it.
