Open Doors Competition Gives International Students Opportunity to Study in Russia
Registration is now open for the Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project, Russia’s first competition for international students applying to Master’s programmes. With registration open until February 16, 2018, the competition consists of two remote stages: a portfolio contest and an online contest. The first stage will take place from December 1, 2017 to February 16, 2018.
The idea for the project was proposed last year by the Global Universities Association, which brings together Russian universities participating in the Academic Excellence Project 5-100, an initiative designed to increase competitiveness on the global research and education market. The Open Doors project has been supported by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and Rossotrudnichestvo.
Competition winners are able to enrol in universities before the admission period even starts and will be able to study for free.
Citizens of any country, stateless individuals, and Russian citizens who live abroad are eligible to take part in the competition. To do so, they must have a Bachelor’s degree or be on track to complete their Bachelor’s programmes in 2018.
The competition will be held in two languages — Russian and English.
Subject areas
This academic year, the competition will be held in four subject areas: Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, and Physics. A leading Russian university coordinates each subject area; HSE is responsible for Economics and is also involved in helping coordinate other three areas.
Winners or runners-up of the competition can choose one of the Master’s programmes that enrols international citizens in their subject area. A table showing the correlation between subject areas and programme fields can be found on the competition website. Those participating in the Economics competition, for example, will be eligible to apply to programmes in three fields: Economics, Management, and Finance & Credit. Similarly, Computer Science covers five fields, Mathematics – eight, and Physics – nine.
Two rounds
The competition is held in two rounds. During the first (qualifying) round, from December 1, 2017 to February 16, 2018, students upload their portfolios on the competition website. The requirements for portfolios differ depending on the subject area.
Those who have passed the initial selection are invited to take part in the second (final) round, which takes place from March 5 to 15, 2018. The second round involves completing assignments in the selected subject area. Some assignments are standardized and checked automatically, while the other part is creative and checked by a jury. Participants who are not satisfied with their results can appeal at this stage.
The results from both rounds are used to calculate the final ranking, and the overall results of the competition will be announced after March 15. The list of winners and runners-up will be posted on the project website.
Admission
Winners and runners-up will be eligible for full-tuition scholarships from the Russian government that can be used to study at any Russian university, including those participating in the Project 5-100. 160 scholarships have been allocated and will be distributed among the four subject areas, depending on the number of participants in each of area. If the chosen programme doesn’t offer state-funded places, winners and runners-up may be eligible to receive a discount on tuition. The tuition waivers in this case may be offered at the discretion of a Master's programme.
Those who are willing to study in Russian but who lack sufficient Russian skills can take part in a preparatory programme before entering a Master’s programme next academic year. This preparatory programme focuses on intensive Russian-language training.

Faculty of Computer Science Members Win Prizes in ICPC Challenge Championship
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Challenge took place at the end of August. Unlike the traditional ICPC format, in which teams of three students solve a set of algorithmic tasks, participants of the ICPC Challenge must individually solve an optimisation problem that is relevant to science-driven industry, but which does not have an exact algorithmic solution. ‘Ecology Provides the Best Opportunities for Professional and Personal Development of Young People’
In early May, the HSE Institute of Ecology and the International Children's and Youth Award ‘Ecology is Everyone's Business’ held a joint seminar in Dagestan, where they discussed the launch of youth environmental projects for federal and international competitions. At the meeting, the Institute's experts presented methods of organising project activity in the field of ecology and sustainable development for educators and young people in Dagestan. Winner of the International KIVO Competition of Innovations in Education Announced in Nizhny Novgorod
The final 10 teams presented their projects to experts in a pitching session at the finals of the KIVO Competition of Innovations in Education. The project defence and award ceremony took place as a side event of the Global Impact Conference, an international platform that brings together experts in the field of sustainable development.
‘The Competition Gave Young Researchers an Opportunity to Take the Initiative’
In September, HSE University announced the results of a competition of digital projects by early-career HSE scientists. The event was organised within the framework of the strategic project ‘Digital Transformation: Technologies, Effects, Efficiency’. The organisers selected 8 out of 22 applications. The research teams have already started to implement their projects, and the results will be presented at the end of November. The creators of the projects are staff members of the HSE Center for Language and Brain, MIEM, and the Faculty of Computer Science.

Data analysis enthusiasts from different regions of Russia and 13 foreign countries recently took part in the Data Analysis National Olympiad (DANO). The results of the first round will be announced on October 20th.

The results of the final round of the 2022 Econometrics Universiade have been announced. As always, ICEF undergraduate students are among the leaders – Vladimir Averin won the overall competition, while Gleb Kudryashov was also among the prize-winners.

This year’s final stage of Top Class, the All-Russian Competition of Schoolchildren’s Research and Projects, held by HSE University, has come to a close. About a thousand 8th—11th graders from 7 countries and 69 regions of Russia participated in the contest. The winners and runners-up were announced at the closing ceremony in the HSE Cultural Centre. They received special prizes from partner companies.
Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation Announces Winners of Two Innovation Competitions
The winners of the KIVO Education Innovation Competition and the Innovator’s Voice all-Russia contest of youth social and educational innovations have been announced. Both competitions were organized by HSE University: KIVO 2021 in partnership with the Rybakov Foundation with support from the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, and Innovator’s Voice with support from the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs.
Two Contestants Correctly Guess All Three Nobel Prize Winners in Economics
The two winners of the Andrej Bremzen competition to correctly predict all three awardees are Ivan Susin, a Research Assistant at the HSE International Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioural Economics, and Maxim Ananyev, a researcher at the University of Melbourne. They both named David Card, Joshua Angrist, and Guido Imbens, and will now receive prizes from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences.

An intellectual competition for secondary school students from all over the world who are lovers of science and technology will be held in Yakutia with the participation of HSE University. High school students from all over the world will gather for several days to participate in projects in the natural sciences and humanities led by scientists and scholars from around the world.
