HSE University to Reward Students Who Write Their Thesis Using AI
HSE University has launched a competition for solutions using artificial intelligence technology in theses work. The goal of the competition is to evaluate how students use tools based on generative models in their 2024 graduation theses (GT).
Students of all bachelor's and master's programmes at HSE University will be able to demonstrate their skills in using neural networks to solve complex problems. The authors of GT will have to describe in detail which AI tools were used in their work, what tasks were set and whether they were solved.
For most students, the use of artificial intelligence is already part of the educational process. According to a recent survey of the HSE University Online Campus, almost 43% of students already use AI in their work: 56% use it to prepare reports, 33% employ it for summaries, and 29% use it for essays.
HSE University Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin notes that the university is continuously interacting with generative models in the educational process, and is convinced that these opportunities can and should be used.

‘Artificial intelligence and generative models are new tools that open up multiple opportunities for solving analytical and creative problems. A modern specialist should master these tools and develop skills in the sphere of artificial intelligence along with expertise in their subject area. We can say that, in the near future, a modern specialist should be able to "count, read, write, and draw" with the help of artificial intelligence; this is becoming part of the professional skills set. And this applies to all areas of education. Our university is currently developing various forms of education in partnership with artificial intelligence. This is implemented both in teaching disciplines that train students to work with the capabilities of artificial intelligence, and in encouraging and teaching its use in students’ projects and theses.’
The theses will be assessed by an expert commission consisting of teachers and researchers from HSE University. The decision will be based on various criteria, including the level and complexity of the problems being solved, as well as the ethics and practicability of using AI.
Three competition winners will receive scholarships (if they continue their studies in master's or doctoral programmes) and will have the option to take part in intensive courses on artificial intelligence at the expense of the university.

Scientists at the AI Research Centre and the Faculty of Computer Science at HSE University, the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (AIRI), and Sber AI have come up with novel architecture for diffusion neural networks, making it possible to configure eight distinct types of noise distribution. HSE University and Pobeda Airlines Launch Joint Competition
HSE Art and Design School, in collaboration with the Pobeda Airlines, has announced the start of a competition to create a new uniform design for flight attendants and representatives of the airline. Young professional designers, as well as students over 18 years old studying at Russian universities in full-time and part-time programmes in the field of ‘Design and Fashion,’ will have the opportunity to showcase their talent.

A student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, Andrey Kuznetsov, has become the winner of the 2024 Data Fusion Contest. He took first place in solving geoanalytics tasks, and also won the special ‘Companion’ category. The competition took place as part of the 2024 Data Fusion conference on big data and AI technologies. Researchers from HSE University presented the results of their work and demonstrated applied developments at the conference.
HSE University and Adyghe State University Launch Digital Ethnolook International Contest
The HSE Centre for Language and Brain and the Laboratory of Experimental Linguistics at Adyghe State University (ASU) have launched the first Digital Ethnolook International Contest in the Brain Art / ScienceArt / EtnoArt format. Submissions are accepted until May 25, 2024.
‘We Need to Learn to Communicate with Artificial Intelligence Services’
An online course 'What is Generative AI?’ has been launched on the Open Education platform, which will help students learn more about how to properly communicate with neural networks so that they can perform tasks better. Daria Kasyanenko, an expert at the Continuing Education Centre and senior lecturer at the Big Data and Information Retrieval School at the Faculty of Computer Science, spoke about how generative AI works and how to create content with its help.
Artificial Intelligence Tested by Kant Philosophy
The Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad) recently hosted an International Congress entitled ‘The World Concept of Philosophy’ in honour of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the philosopher and thinker Immanuel Kant. HSE Vice Rector, Head of the BRICS Expert Council–Russia and Co-chair of the BRICS Civil Forum Victoria Panova, and Dean of the HSE Faculty of Humanities and Chair of the Contest Jury Felix Azhimov, announced the primary objectives of the contest, its format and potential participants during a press conference at TASS. Nationals from the BRICS countries, aged 18 to 45, are eligible to apply for participation in the contest. The jury will select ten winners, three of whom will be given the opportunity to attend the BRICS Civil Forum in Moscow in person.

HSE and Yandex to Expand Collaboration in Training AI Specialists
Over the next ten years, the partnership between Yandex and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) will broaden across three key areas: launching new educational programmes, advancing AI research, and exploring the application of generative neural networks in the educational process. Established by HSE University and Yandex a decade ago, the Faculty of Computer Science has since emerged as a frontrunner in training developers and experts in AI and machine learning, with a total of 3,385 graduates from the faculty over this period.
