A Study to Compare School Heads in Different Regions

The Centre for Developing Leadership in Education at the HSE Institute of Education is starting a project to study school heads in 16 Russian regions to make recommendations for a professional development and training programme. The project will become part of the international comparative research on school heads, the Asia Leadership Project, which HSE signed up to a year ago at a conference in Malaysia.

Winter Lessons at HSE

On 31st January to 2nd February 2015 HSE held its annual International Winter School. The Department of Public Policy and Master Programme in Political Analysis and Public Policy headed by professor Nina Belyaeva took part in the event. The Winter School welcomed participants from Germany, France, China, Japan and other countries.

Understanding Our Own History by Learning about Another’s

Social Historian, Franziska Exeler has focussed much of her research on the Soviet Union and the Second World War but at HSE she is asking students to find out what happened in other countries to try to understand the Soviet experience in a global context. She talked to the HSE English News website about teaching and researching at the HSE International Centre for History and Sociology, about discovering Moscow’s architecture and about her life as an academic in Russia.

Computer Science Colloquium Now Available on Youtube

The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, where international specialists teach alongside Russian professors and one Master’s programme on systems and programming engineering is taught entirely in English, has launched a public colloquium. The colloquium — a faculty-wide seminar — is a platform for teachers, research fellows, graduates and undergraduates and anyone interested in computer science to discuss and exchange opinions and information. The only rule for the colloquium is that whoever wants to talk about their new research results or issues related to computing must use language that everyone can understand.

Every era builds its own version of the Middle Ages, and the modern age is no exception. Oleg Voskoboynikov, the youngest full professor at the Higher School of Economics, talks about the reason for the popularity of metaphors that refer to that era, why the ‘Suffering Middle Ages’ group on VKontakte [Russia’s largest social media site — Ed.] is not the same thing as medieval studies and how the desire to be different from everyone else can lead a student to study the Middle Ages.

University’s Social Mission

HSE has hosted the first patient conference ‘Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): sharing experience to help people with ALS. The event was organized by a group of relatives of people with ALS, in conjunction with the Federal State Public Scientific Institution ‘Neurological Science Centre’, and the ALS Support Service at the Miloserdie medical centre. The HSE’s International College of Economics and Finance and the Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics acted as co-organizers. Volunteers, psychologists, and doctors in various specialties who are involved in treating people with ALS also took part.

HSE Winter School: The Whole World in Miniature

From January 24 to February 4, HSE's Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs hosted an international winter school. Sixty students from across the globe (Korea, Japan, China, Germany, Italy, Poland, Egypt, Morocco, to name but a few) came together for 12 days and were plunged into the hustle and bustle of daily life in Russia.

Andrey Okounkov: 'Happiness Is not about Proving Something to Other People'

In the whole history of mathematics just 8 winners of the highest award - the Field Prize - have come from Russia. One of them is Andrey Okounkov, Academic Supervisor at theInternational Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics HSE. On Hamburg Reckoning, a weekly programme which broadcasts interviews with major academics on current Russian issues on the OTR TV channel, he talked about his journey from economics to mathematics, about the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE and what makes mathematicians happy.
