Alliance of 4 Plus the HSE

On October 10th HSE staff met with representatives of the Alliance of 4 Universities of Spain (A-4U): the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Charles III University of Madrid and the Pompeu Fabra University. Boris Zhelezov, Deputy Vice Rector of the HSE, told us about the outcomes of the meeting.

“Nature Optimizes Things the Best Way”

On October 5th, high level HSE management and leading faculty members had a meeting with Panos Pardalos, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, USA, to discuss plans and future opportunities for a new Laboratory at the HSE branch in Nizhny Novgorod. The Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies of Network Structures will be established through a grant from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. ‘Our Interest Is More than just Economics’

On September 29th the first lecture in the cycle of meetings of top-managers of the largest in Europe gas company E.ON Ruhrgas AG with the university students took place at the HSE. Steffen Bruendel, Head of Cultural and Academic Affairs at the E.ON Ruhrgas Corporate Office, and Hans-Peter Floren, Member of the Board of Management, E.ON Ruhrgas AG, told us about this lecture course.

‘Half a Dozen Years Ago We Were a Curiosity Here’

On September 26th a meeting between the administration of the Higher School of Economics and international lecturers and researchers took place at the HSE. The aim of the event was to discuss various organizational, legal and academic aspects of their work at the HSE.

Development of the University: Evaluations by IAC Members

On May 30th a meeting of the International Advisory Committee of the HSE Development Programme took place at the HSE. The committee was formed in early 2010 and this was its first full assembly.

University Spirit of Inequality

On March 15th a regular seminar of the HSE Institute for Educational Studies took place, dedicated to the problem of accessibility to education for children from various social groups around the world. Jamil Salmi, coordinator of the World Bank's network of tertiary education professionals, spoke on ‘Equality and the Human Capital Development: the Role of Higher Education’.

External Expert Evaluation

On November 25th and 26th the first meeting of the HSE International Expert Council on the priority area of development Economics took place at the HSE. Vladimir Avtonomov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Economics, Franz Hubert, Professor at the Humboldt University Berlin, Andrey Yakovlev, Vice Rector of the HSE, and Richard Jackman, Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, told us about the results of the meeting.

To Start ‘from Scratch’?

On September 7th Valdai International Discussion Club held a roundtable discussion on ‘Russian History, Geography and Future’ at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs.

Studying the Civil Society

The 9th World Assembly of the World Alliance for Citizen Participation (CIVICUS) ‘Acting Together for a Just World’ took place in Montreal on August 20th-23rd and involved about 500 delegates from 70 countries, with representatives from NGOs, international organizations, media, business and research institutions, including the Higher School of Economics.

Motivation for Natural Selection

On May 22nd the first meeting of the International Advisory Committee of the Higher School of Economics took place. The Committee involves leading world experts in economics, sociology and education.
