On July 6, 2016, the VI International Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Affairs came to a close. Run jointly by the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and East China Normal University, with sponsorship provided by the Gorchakov Fund, this year’s school focused on the role of institutions in the new global governance architecture.
The International Congress on Russia and Spain: Politics, Economics, Culture was the first to bring together leading Russian researchers on Spain and Spanish scholars representing various fields of the social sciences and humanities.

On 5th February, American diplomat and political scientist Henry Kissinger visited the HSE Faculty of World Economics and International Affairs. This year, Panagiotis Sarantidis, from Greece, graduated from HSE’s International Business programme, headed by Irina Kratko. According to Prof. Kratko, foreign students’ motivations for choosing Moscow as a place to study are quite varied. Some of them intend to connect their future career with Russia, already having ideas to establish joint ventures here. Others, for example HSE students from the United States, have previously studied the Russian language, so their interest is perhaps rooted in the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
HSE has held the 5th International Relations Russia-China Summer School 'Eurasia 2020: Prospects for cooperation.' The school has been held since 2011 by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs jointly with the East China Normal University (Shanghai, China). This year it was held with support from the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund. This is the only summer school of this kind held in Russia.

On June 1 S. Karaganov Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, HSE’s participated in the opening session “The Search for Global Leadership” an annual flagship London Conference (Chatham House), launched in 2014, brings together 200 senior decision-makers in the policy, business, civil society and academic spheres to debate the systemic risks facing the world as a result of the deepening process of globalization.
On 7-10th April 2015 the HSE, supported by the World Bank will be holding the XVI April International Conference on Economic and Social Development. Top political scientists, sociologists and economists, government officials and businessmen will discuss the burning issues we are facing today; should we take the path of international integration, how can we resolve the current economic crisis and where should we look for new drivers of economic growth? Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an executive order on recognizing almost 200 Russians for their achievements in the workplace, many years of conscientious work, and active role taken in society. Those recognized included several members of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights, including Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs Sergey Karaganov and Professor at the Faculty of Law Tamara Morshchakova.
Chairman of the OSCE, Switzerland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Didier Burkhalter proposed that Sergey A. Karaganov, Dean of HSE’s Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs and Honorable Chairman of the Presidium of the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, should be included in the High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on European Security as a Common Project. The Panel’s first working meeting will be at the Munich Security Conference in February this year.
On July 3-10, the IV International Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations, ‘Space and Time in the Eurasian Era,’ took place in Moscow. The event was organized by the HSE and East China Normal University. A total of 15 Russian and 12 Chinese students are taking part in the summer school. The summer school, whose working language is English, is intended for undergraduate and graduate students from Russia and China that are interested in international relations.
On May 30, 2014, the HSE Academic Council voted to open a new ‘mega department’ – the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. The structure of this big division will include a Department of World Economy, a Department of International Affairs, and the School of Asian Studies. Sergey Karaganov will serve as Dean of the Faculty.

On July 1, 2013, the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy (CFDP) held an international political conference ‘Democracy and Meritocracy: Are the Two Principles Compatible?’, in which international and Russian experts took part.

On December 1st an inauguration ceremony for Alexander Rahr, a prominent expert in Russian-German relations, as Honorary Professor of the HSE took place at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs.
