“There’s something special about mathematics: you cannot separate learning mathematics from doing mathematics. That’s why an ideal student not only wants to gain mathematical knowledge, he wants to know immediately how the new knowledge is connected with the old, and what advantages it gives him for solving his old problems.

I want the students to understand the subject ‘from the inside’. The aim of the course is to make sure students can effectively use the methods of representation theory in problems which are not actually part of this theory. To do that, they need to have a deep understanding of not only the key theorems (even with all the details of proofs), but also the mechanisms responsible for these theorems.”

“Our principle is to involve different lecturers in delivering courses, in order to offer the students as many approaches to one problem as possible. And if the lecturers reading a complex joint course represent not only different academic disciplines, but different cultural and academic traditions, it is very enriching for the students.

Thus, education is no longer totalitarian, with one overriding point of view. On the contrary, each student has a choice. This stimulates him to read more, think more about what has been read and heard. And this is what we fight for. Our courses are interactive, and we are looking for a dialogue.”

"This year we will be continuing to follow our guiding principle – to follow the best practices of universities around the world. We are keeping our early application procedure, and we are using Skype to interview prospective students from other cities.

These innovations, which we introduced last year, have made the application process in ICEF much easier: most applicants in 2012 were clear about their chances long before the start of the official enrolment procedure, and students from other cities had time to decide whether to go to Moscow.

Last year’s experience was very successful, and in the coming years, no doubt the role of technology in ICEF will continue to grow."

Irina Maltseva, Head of the Master in European Business (MEB) Programme offered by HSE's International Institute of Administration and Business (IIAB) in cooperation with ESCP Europe:

"HSE IIAB is now a full partner and listed as a campus for ESCP Europe's. All students we enroll now have a choice. They may take their first autumn semester in Moscow, and then go to one of ESCP Europe's campuses in London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid or Torino for the second semester. Alternatively, they may go to Europe for the first semester, and then come back to Moscow for the second semester.

We expect ESCP's international students to come to Russia, so we will have cross-cultural study groups during both semesters in Moscow."
