‘I Always Look for Tasks That Involve the Creation of New Models’
The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters held a ceremonial meeting on September 13 at which it named HSE professor Fuad Aleskerov a foreign member. Aleskerov is a professor of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences, head of the Department of Mathematics and director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis. The list of the Academy’s foreign members began with mathematician Mstislav Keldysh, and in the 20 years since, only two more scientists have joined those ranks. In this interview, Fuad Aleskerov explains why he became a scientist, what his scientific interests are and what a mathematical model and a yellow dandelion have in common.

In the more than 10 years since it was established, the HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis has travelled a long way from a laboratory to an academic centre of gravity for globally renowned scholars.Fuad Aleskerov, Professor in the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences and Director of the HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis, spoke about the evolution of the centre’s team, its research activity, and solving Arctic dilemmas through the use of mathematical models.
Scientists Assess the Effectiveness of Forest Fires Suppression in the Russian Regions
April officially marked the beginning of the peak forest fire season across Russia, and preventative measures have recently been discussed at the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (also known as The Ministry of Emergency Situations, MChS) and at a meeting in which the President of the Russian Federation participated. Regions have already started taking measures to prevent forest fires, and a team of researchers from the Faculty of Economic Sciences of HSE University has proposed a mathematical model by which the effectiveness of these measures can be evaluated. Using this algorithm, they compared Russian regions in terms of the success of their firefighting activities. Details of the work have been published in the collection ‘Dynamics of Disasters: Impact, Risk, Resilience, and Solutions’.
‘The Opening of the Full-time Advanced Doctoral Programme Was a Gift from Fate for Me’
In 2010, HSE University launched the Full-time Advanced Doctoral Programme, an innovative programme for doctoral students at that time. How Following the Law Helps to Fight the COVID 19 Pandemic
Mathematicians of the Higher School of Economics have calculated the effectiveness of measures taken to fight the coronavirus epidemic in different countries. They have concluded that the scale of anti-epidemic measures does not necessarily directly affect the disease rate, suggesting that one of the main reasons for this is the willingness of citizens to clearly, honestly and consistently comply with anti-epidemic measures.

Without official partnership between the two universities, both Yogender and Samarth took the initiative to apply to HSE themselves. Twelve photographs of Moscow landmarks and skyline made in summer by Johnson Chow Chun Shing, an intern at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, are currently on display at Shabolvoka building. Participants of the Autumn School "Modern Trends in Decision Theory" were invited to the gala opening and were the first guests of the exhibition. Renowned Professors Offer New Courses for Summer University Students
HSE’s Summer University officially opened on June 20. Now in its fourth week, the Summer University is in full swing at three of HSE’s four campuses– Moscow, St Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Participants continue coming to Russia for courses on topics such as politics, history, economics, and Russian and Eurasian cultures. Most courses last two to four weeks and all of them are taught in English.

Decision-making Rules Least Susceptible to Manipulation, According to Science
HSE researchers have used computer modelling to demonstrate the varying manipulability of decision-making procedures and to identify those least susceptible to manipulation. Their findings are published in the paper 'Manipulability of Majority Relation-based Collective Decision Rules'.

New International Labs at HSE St. Petersburg to Study Economy of Health and Game Theory
On June 26, the HSE Academic Council approved the opening of two new international laboratories. Specifically, the St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management will gain a laboratory for the study of healthcare economics, management, and policy, as well as a laboratory for game theory and decision-making. Higher School of Economics Expands Cooperation with University of Turin
On December 3, 2014 an Italian delegation led by the Rector of the University of Turin, Gianmaria Ajani, visited HSE. First Counsellor of the Embassy of Italy in the Russian Federation, Agostino Pinna and Pietro Fre, Deputy Head of Theoretical Physics Department and Attaché for Science of the Embassy of Italy in the Russian Federation were also present.
