A new academic year is the right time to start planning one’s international projects and publications. The HSE Academic Writing Centre invites researchers, faculty members, and postgraduate students to the AWC Welcome Day on September 23–24. This is a traditional event to start the year where the participants can get to know the AWC team and find out more about its programme for the autumn semester.

Vincent Fardeau, Associate Professor at HSE ICEF, has reached a major career milestone: he recently published his paper ‘Asymmetric Thin Markets’ in the Journal of Financial Economics, successfully passed his major academic review, and received tenure. In early September, more than 300 students and friends of the HSE Online campus gathered for the fourth time in real life to say goodbye to summer and kick off the academic year. For one evening, the courtyard of the HSE building on Staraya Basmannaya Street turned into a cosy autumn space for creativity, communication, movies, and career consultations.

In summer 2026, the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) took several steps towards establishing closer ties with leading Chinese universities. The Faculty signed a landmark memorandum with one of China’s top technical universities and also began talks with Peking University. In addition, the International Laboratory for Digital Transformation in Public Administration, affiliated with FSS, held an international summer school in Moscow with the participation of Chinese colleagues.

The AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science invites researchers, developers and everyone shaping the future of technology to the fifth, anniversary edition of the Fall into Machine Learning conference (Fall into ML 2026). The event will take place on October 23–24, 2026, at the HSE Cultural Centre in Moscow and will become the key meeting point for Russia’s AI community.

HSE University has joined the international BESIII (Beijing Spectrometer III) collaboration in high-energy physics. This marks the first practical outcome of the memorandum of cooperation signed in 2025 between HSE University and the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing, China.

On December 3–5, 2026, HSE University in Moscow will host ‘Comorbid Field 3.0: Social Well-Being, Health, and Medicine in Multiple Contexts,’ an interdisciplinary scientific conference organised by the HSE Centre for Comparative Research on Social Well-Being together with the HSE University–St Petersburg School of Arts and Humanities, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Health Research at the European University at St Petersburg, and Sechenov University. Applications for participation are open until October 4.

When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience.
