  • Overcoming Challenges as a Team: Students of the School of Foreign Languages Present Innovative Projects for Companies

Following an established tradition, the HSE School of Foreign Languages held a pre-New Year poster session, during which fourth-year undergraduate students of the Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication programme defended their practice-oriented projects. The assessment panel included representatives of major companies and organisations. Working together with HSE students, they shared their professional experience, skills, and expertise.

  • ‘Growth Often Happens Quietly, When No One is Watching’

The end of the year is a natural time for reflection on the past and planning for the future. With the winter holidays almost here, the HSE News Service has been asking international students to share their experiences and take stock of the year gone by. In this instalment, master’s students Raihanulla Moghmand and Isaac Sarfo talk about traditional New Year celebrations in their home countries, explain what they’ve learned from life in Russia so far, and share some warm wishes for their fellow students.

  • School Students Master Communication with GigaChat at HSE and Sber Hackathon

In late December 2025, a unique competition was held at HSE University where participants solved challenges not by writing code, but solely by interacting with Sber’s GigaChat artificial intelligence model. The Improm(p)tu hackathon was an experiment less about programming skills than a new form of literacy: the ability to work effectively with AI by translating complex problems into a language neural networks can understand.

  • Research Seminar: Assembly Point of Science

Research seminars are not merely a formality but a driving force of science. Where do research projects come from? How do students become equal collaborators? And why can a whiteboard in a seminar room sometimes matter more than a formal conference presentation? In this interview for Schola, Alexander Nesterov and Konstantin Sorokin discuss the internal research seminar of the International Laboratory of Game Theory and Decision Making.

  • The New Year Tree of Wishes: A Beacon of Kindness and Light

On the eve of the New Year, HSE is once again helping make the dearest wishes of less-fortunate children come true. For several years now, the New Year Tree of Wishes charitable initiative has brought together students, lecturers, and university staff who want to spread a little magic during the winter holidays.

  • Transition to Sustainable Development Requires Deep Structural Transformation of Business

A group of researchers has proposed assessing the ESG transformation of businesses through the partner turnover ratio in raw material and distribution supply chains. The researchers note that the path towards sustainability requires a deep and often costly restructuring of partner networks. This and other papers were presented at the Third International Annual Conference ‘ESG Corporate Dynamics: the Challenges for Emerging Capital Markets.’

  • ‘Choosing the Right Moment’: HSE Revives the Traditions of Historical Fencing

Historical sabre fencing is actively developing at HSE University. In 2024, a student club dedicated to this martial art was established, and recently the HSE Open Cup was held in the atrium on Pokrovsky Bulvar. The tournament brought together representatives of 21 universities from different regions of Russia and the Republic of Belarus.

  • ‘Analytical Centres and Programmes for PhD Students’: HSE University–St Petersburg Offers New Formats of Cooperation with PRC

The Rope Shop Educational Space of HSE University–St Petersburg hosted a conference on the present and future of Russian–Chinese relations. Together with Luo Zhanhui, Consul General of China in St Petersburg, leading experts in Asian and African Studies discussed vectors for the long-term development of the countries, the synergy of joint projects, and future educational partnerships.

  • HSE Researchers Offer Guidance to Prevent Undergraduate Burnout

Researchers at the HSE Institute of Education have identified how much time students should ideally devote to their studies, extracurricular activities, and personal life to maintain strong academic performance without compromising their mental health. An analysis of responses from 2,753 students, combined with their academic results, revealed risk factors—such as excessive homework—as well as positive factors, including sufficient sleep, exercise, and participation in projects.
